CCS HONORS DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING THROUGH A DAY OF SERVICE EVENT WITH GUEST SPEAKERS SENATOR MARK KIRK, MAYOR LARRY MORRISSEY, STATE REPRESENTATIVE CHUCK JEFFERSON, AND ALDERMAN LINDA McNEELY

On Jan. 17, Comprehensive Community Services, Inc. (CCS)/ YouthBuild Rockford AmeriCorps will mark the National Martin Luther King Day of Service by hosting our 2nd Annual MLK Day Celebration. We are joining with community leaders and service providers to offer educational workshops and community service projects. Our purpose is to advance the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King by commemorating his life and teachings by showing how national service is uniting Americans from all backgrounds and improving our local communities.

The day will be structured around the theme of "a day on, not a day off." With that motto in mind, the day of service will feature a variety of booths from local service providers, motivational and educational workshops, and community service in the afternoon. In addition to workshops and service there will be guest speakers including Senator Mark Kirk, Mayor Larry Morrissey, State Representative Chuck Jefferson, and Alderman Linda McNeely.

Festivities will take place at CCS, Inc., located at 917 S. Main St., Rockford, IL, 61101. The event will run from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Registration starts at 7:45 a.m.

The Martin Luther King Day of Service program was organized by YouthBuild Rockford AmeriCorps National Direct and VISTA Members. YouthBuild Rockford AmeriCorps is a program of Comprehensive Community Solutions, Inc. YouthBuild Rockford serves out of school youth ages 16-24 from low-income communities who have dropped out of school and are unemployed. It provides academic education, vocational skills training, personal counseling, positive peer support, leadership development, job placement and follow-up support.
