CCS Inc./YouthBuild Rockford Announce Community Service for AmeriCorps Week 2011
Comprehensive Community Solutions, Inc./YouthBuild Rockford AmeriCorps discussed its plans to provide service during AmeriCorps Week, May 16-20 at a press conference, May 16, in the Hoop House Garden.
William Chatman, Interim Community Service Coordinator and YouthBuild Rockford graduate, discussed the importance of YouthBuild Rockford’s long-time commitment to helping those in need and, in particular, how AmeriCorps supports that mission.
After Chatman’s remarks, our collaborative partners in urban agriculture also discussed the vision of turning unused property throughout Rockford into community gardens:

- Antar Baker, Program Manager, Angelic Organics Learning Center’s Urban Initiative: Roots & Wings
- Katie Townsend, Urban Farm Educator, Eco-Advocates
- Beverly Broyles, Executive Director, Tinker Swiss Cottage Museum and Gardens
Tiante Lockett, YouthBuild Garden Leader talked to reporters about the organization’s plans to plant for a community garden for a second year adjacent to Booker Washington Community Center. Eco-Advocates students also accompanied Townsend on a tour of her group’s garden on the grounds of the Tinker estate
Chatman also outlined other community service activities for the week, including repairing homes within the Ellis Heights Weed & Seed community, serving meals at the Rockford Rescue Mission and finishing construction of a single-family home.
AmeriCorps Week is a weeklong observance of community service that recognizes the work AmeriCorps members accomplish in their communities. AmeriCorps is a national network of hundreds of programs throughout the United States focused on strengthening communities. The goal of the event is to bring more Americans into service and raise awareness about the AmeriCorps program.
